My Eyes Are Tired. My TBR Pile Is Not.

In 2020, I started a book review website because I am an avid reader. Reading has always been one of my favorite ways to spend time and escape for a little while. My preferred genres are paranormal romance, fantasy, and urban fantasy. Yes, I’m a vampire, werewolf, fairy, and dragon rider book lover. Regularly, I also read non-fiction books and review them as a side hustle. And yes, I can spend hours reading or stay up all night reading a new release.

But my reading habits don’t stop with fiction.

I regularly read non-fiction books, and review them as a side hustle. In a typical week, I’ll read five nonfiction books, listen to two or three audiobooks, and write short- and long-format reviews. Between reading, researching, writing, editing, and publishing, my eyes get a serious workout.

And reading is only part of my day.

When I’m not buried in a book, I am usually creating content, writing articles, managing social media, or writing press releases as part of my small freelance business. Much of my work happens behind a computer while my reading happens on a cellphone.

In other words, screen time is a significant part of my life.

That means taking care of my eyes is important to me and critical to my work and play. Unfortunately, I often forget to wear my reading glasses, look away from the screen, or give my eyes a chance to rest. Typically, I use eye drops and warm compresses to relieve my tired eyes and muscle fatigue.

So when I had the chance to try the OTUS from Edenlux, I was curious.

I received one in early August. It came in a sturdy white box with the device, head straps, charging cord, brick, serial number card, and easy-to-follow directions.

OTUS: Innovation Backed by Medical Expertise

OTUS was founded by Dr. Sungyong Park, M.D., a medical doctor whose experience and interest in vision care helped shape the technology behind OTUS. What started with a focus on improving vision through training has grown into a global product, with more than 30,000 units sold worldwide. OTUS has also received a CES Innovation Award, recognizing its innovative approach to digital health and vision training.

First Impressions

It looks like a virtual reality headset; however, it isn’t one.

I appreciate how lightweight and easy to use it is when I read books on my phone, work on my computer, or stream my favorite social media platforms. It didn’t feel like a clunky, cumbersome piece of digital equipment on my head.

Before using the OTUS, I had to charge it for 1 ½ hours prior to first use. After that, I found it charges within 30 minutes.

Getting started was straightforward. The device connects to a cellphone via the Edenlux app. I completed the setup quickly by following the instructions included in the box.

Measuring My Eyes

Before beginning eye exercise, I completed the recommended eye measurement. This process is recommended once a week.

The process was painless and took approximately 3 to 5 minutes to complete. The OTUS used my measurement results to determine an appropriate eye-exercise regimen and suggested usage time.

Because I’m slightly to moderately nearsighted, I was particularly interested in how comfortable the device was during actual use.

I jumped into longer sessions right away, then tried some shorter sessions. Over three days, I experimented with sessions ranging from 5-minute to 20-minute trials to see how my eyes felt and responded.

What It Was Like

The OTUS fits over my head with or without prescription glasses. It comes with a lens clip users can use instead of their glasses.

Another convenient feature was the ability to switch between phone use and TV viewing by pressing a button.

The device automatically adjusts the focal distance by switching between different lenses. During my sessions, I viewed my eBooks on my cellphone.

This was the most interesting part of the experience.

At different points, the images and words I viewed appeared larger, smaller, perfectly focused, or intentionally blurred. Rather than forcing my eyes to focus, the device guided my eyes through the changes.

Did It Make A Difference?

Yes.

I am genuinely impressed by how comfortable and relaxed my eyes felt after each session.

During my three-day trial, I used the OTUS after long days of reading, computer work, some car travel, streaming movies, and social media reels. By the end of some of those days, my eyes would normally feel tired, dry, and scratchy.

After the OTUS, I felt noticeably more relaxed.

I also found I fell asleep more easily on the nights I used it.

For me, longer exercise sessions were more effective than shorter ones.

Don’t get me wrong, the shorter sessions did help my tiredness and eye fatigue, but didn’t provide the deep relaxation I experienced from longer exercise. A better practice would be to start with shorter sessions and move on to the longer ones.

For now, I’ve chosen to set my eye drops and warm compresses.

Unfortunately, I still need my reading glasses, but oh well.

I’ll survive.

Why OTUS Fits My Lifestyle

One of my favorite things about OTUS is that it doesn’t require me to stop what I’m doing to rearrange my day around eye care.

Its open-front design makes it easier to incorporate into my routine. As someone who frequently reads, works remotely, creates digital content, and spends a considerable amount of time looking at screens, that matters.

I can move between activities without feeling like I’m committing to a complicated wellness routine.

For example, I can read an eBook on my cellphone, then return to my computer work afterward. The ability to shift between activities to find relaxation and comfort makes the OTUS appealing to me.

I also appreciate that the OTUS can be shared.

A family of four can use the device with one cellphone and device, which makes it a practical option for a household rather than purchasing additional devices for every person.

The free Edenlux app is another nice addition and is essential to using the device. However, you can use the device without it. Follow the instructions in the booklet. It links users to a free eye exercise game they can download from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

As someone who prefers non-invasive approaches to personal wellness, I like that OTUS gives me another option to add exercise and relaxation into my day.

My Final Thoughts

As a lifelong reader, freelance writer, content creator, and remote worker, I spend a lot of time looking at screens. That is unlikely to change anytime soon.

I love my books. I still have press releases to write and social media to create.

For now, my books aren’t going anywhere.

Neither is my laptop.

So I could give my eyes some tender loving care while using them.

If I were to score the OTUS on a scale of 1-10, I’d give it a 9. It performs as advertised, represented, and as intended.

Individual results may vary. I’m sharing my personal experience with a photo. The OTUS device I reviewed was provided to me free of charge, and I was paid to share my personal trial experience.
